Dry Hair Treatment

Dry Hair Treatment

Dry hair is due to a lack of moisture and more importantly humectants and lipids (essential fatty acids). Signs of dried-out hair are dullness, dry or rough feeling, split ends, frizziness, and it is difficult to comb or brush.

Dry Hair Causes:

• Environmental damage – sun, heat, outside chemicals.

• Mechanical damage – blow drying, curling irons, hot rollers.

• Chemical damage – perms, color, bleach.

• Some people have hair that is naturally dry; there is no natural wet.

In each case lipids are lost from the hair. These lipids are humectants which attract and hold moisture into the hair. They must be replaced.

The key is to increase the hair’s ability to attract and retain moisture.

Dry Hair Solutions:

1. Dry hair is very fragile and needs special care. Be gentle when lathering and avoid any pulling or yanking. Don’t scrub with your fingernails – this will not only irritate your scalp but can cause hair breakage. Brush your lock gently and never when it’s wet.
2. Allow your hair to air dry wherever possible. When you must use your hairdryer, blow drying hair should be done correctly – use it on a cooler temperature and aim it down the hair shaft.
3. Be careful not to over wash your locks. It’s very easy to strip away the natural oils if you wash it too often. Once or twice a week is enough.
4. Rinse with water alone on off days.
5. Use a moisturizing and nourishing shampoo. Use only a mild, acidic shampoo that is labeled “for dry or damaged hair.” A good shampoo should have a pH of between 4.5 and 6.7. Look for ingredients like zinc pyrithione, sulfide, or coal-tar.
6. Condition after every shampoo. Condition your hair on a regular basis (once a week is suggested) with an intensive, deep conditioning treatment. Use products that contain no alcohol, which can dry out hair even more. In general, conditioners with fragrance have alcohol, so avoid them. If your hair is very dry, use an overnight conditioner. Mayonnaise is a great natural conditioner. Leave it in your tresses for anywhere from 15-20 minutes before washing it out.
7. If you can afford, use a salon-grade shampoo and conditioner; these products contain less “filler” ingredients.
8. Apply over-the-counter hot-oil treatment to repair dry, damaged hair. Wear a shower cap over your hair while the hot oil is on; rinse after 5 to 20 minutes.
9. Reduce your use of hairspray, mousse, hair gels and styling creams that contain chemical ingredients. With excessive use, they can easily irritate your scalp and damage your hair.
10. While, shampooing, do a scalp massage to stimulate oil glands in the skin.
11. Do not use mousse on brittle, dry hair, use a thickening lotion instead.
12. Every six weeks snip off frayed ends.
13. Beer is a good setting lotion to give healthy, shiny look to dry hair. Spray it onto your locks using a pump bottle after shampooing but before you blow-dry.
14. Treating dry hair also should include drinking plenty of water, eating a diet of good proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins A, C, E, and calcium.
15. If you spend a lot of time in the strong sunlight, use a hair sunscreen or protect your hair with a headscarf or hat.

Vegan Music - Vienna Vegetable Orchestra

Vegan Music - Vienna Vegetable Orchestra

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra makes unique organic music, using instruments made from vegetables. Pepper trumpets, leek violins, celery bongos, cucumberphones, pumpkin drums – these are just a handful of instruments used by the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra to entertain audiences everywhere, with their organic music.

This one-of-a-kind music group was born when its current members were students. At first they started playing vegetable instruments, as a joke, but quickly realized they might be on to something, and took their work more seriously.

The dozen members of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra carve their instruments themselves, using whatever vegetables are available, at the location of their performance. After 12 years of making vegetable music, the group has learned what type of vegetables sound better in every country, judging by a range of factors, such as temperature and water content.

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra needs 70 kilograms of fresh vegetables for every concert, and three hours to carve the instruments they use. But their music wouldn't exist without modern technological equipment, like amplifiers or sophisticated microphones. Combined with the squeaking of cucumbers, crackling of cabbage leaves and banging of aubergines, they create a hypnotic type of music, described as something between techno music and whale songs.

Tips on Getting Rid of Dandruff

Tips on Getting Rid of Dandruff

Dandruff is a mysterious ailment. Mysterious, because there is no commonly agreed upon theory about what actually causes this condition. Sure, you will read different things about its cause. It is estimated that as much as 97% of the population of the United States will at some point in their lives have a form of dandruff, but there is still a lack of total agreement about this condition.

This is easiest if you use the lemon juice that comes in squeeze bottles, not fresh lemons. Over a sink, squirt lemon juice directly on your scalp and gently massage the juice in with the tips of your fingers. Make sure you cover your entire scalp to get best results. Let the lemon juice work its wonders for about 15 minutes, then wash your hair as you normally would. If you used enough lemon juice, your scalp shouldn’t itch after the first or second treatment.

Dandruff may require multiple treatments to the full effect (keep in mind that this is a temporary treatment, repeat this process if you get dandruff again later). This is a common Indian treatment that my mom did to me when I was younger and is great because all it requires is a cheap product most of us already have and doesn’t require us to do anything sketchy like putting aspirin in our hair.

Never use the brush or comb of the person suffering from dandruff as it is dangerous and contagious. Likewise, make sure that you wash your comb/brush after every shampoo if you have dandruff yourself! Many medicines, medicated soaps and shampoos are available to counter dandruff, but the most effective is cleanliness of hair. Brush your hair thrice a day and shampoo at least once a week. While washing your hair, take care the water does not trickle down your face. There are chances that you may get pimples.

Dandruff can be caused by coming out of a warm or hot shower, with the warm or hot water on your scalp. It has something to do with the temperature change.

Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and six tablespoons of hot water. Dab with water into the scalp, parting the hair with a comb apply all over the scalp. Next morning wash the hair with shampoo. After the hair is thoroughly cleansed pour over as a last rinse a mixture of three tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and one cup of hot water. Then dry the hair thoroughly. This should be done twice a week for three months.

The use of fenugreek seeds is one of the most important remedies in the treatment of dandruff. Two tablespoons of these seeds should be soaked overnight in water and ground into a fine paste in the morning. This paste should be applied all over the scalp and left for half an hour. The hair should then be washed thoroughly with soap-nut (ritha) solution or shikakai.

Give your hair a hot steam bath. Massage hot oil with a hot damp towel and leave it on the head like a turban so that the steam can fight dandruff. You may use two towels for this purpose. This will improve the moisture of your scalp skin to fight against forming dandruff.
